About
Steve Reed was Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary from September 2025 until July 2026, after serving as Environment Secretary. He left government when Andy Burnham formed his cabinet on 20 July 2026, saying he was "disappointed to be leaving government" and making "no apology" for his loyalty to Keir Starmer; Angela Rayner, who held the brief before him, returned to it. A former leader of Lambeth Council, he has been an MP since winning the 2012 Croydon North by-election.
His brief included implementing the Renters' Rights Act — Section 21 abolition commenced 1 May 2026, with the PRS Database, Landlord Ombudsman and Decent Homes Standard following from late 2026 — and Labour's wider housebuilding push.
